Deadstock fabric can refer to unsold fabric which was produced in higher quantities than needed. So, it became a surplus fabric. Or, all the fabric scraps created during the production of clothes can become deadstock materials too. The same goes for damaged fabrics – like the ones that got dyed with the wrong color. Fabrics with tiny imperfections are – yes, you guessed it – can be deadstock fabrics too.
So, yes, deadstock fabric is a term with plenty of meanings.
But long story short: deadstock fabric is basically any material that is leftover and not planned to be used. Well, unless a brand comes to its rescue!
PS: don't confuse deadstock fabric with 'dead stock'. When the word is split into two, it usually refers to unsold inventory.
Deadstock fabric refers to any surplus or leftover material that is used to make something valuable. So instead of this material ending up in a landfill or being burnt, it can find its way to your wardrobe.
Here, you can find stunning products made from natural (aka plants) and/or synthetic materials that would otherwise be wasted.
But if you prefer to only scroll through products made from natural deadstock fabrics (such as surplus cotton), don't worry. We thought of you! That's why you can check out our natural deadstock fabrics and synthetic deadstock materials separately as well.
Deadstock materials can be used for anything. It all depends on the actual fabric. So, of course, any clothing can be made from surplus fabric, and bum & belt bags, scarves or hats too. And even tinier products like bottle holders or face masks can be made out of deadstock fabrics. The options are endless!
It is definitely sustainable to use surplus or leftover fabric instead of throwing it away. This is also more energy efficient as new fabric does not have to be produced instead.
But the story of deadstock fabrics is not always so simple.
The thing is that if there is a need for surplus fabric on the market, it can encourage overproduction.
Also, the sustainability of deadstock fabrics depends on the actual material it is made from. Luckily with us, you can read about all the materials you're interested in!
