Deadstock fabric is a surplus or leftover material with no further use. Well, unless somebody does use it. And this way, it becomes deadstock fabric.

Basically, deadstock fabric can be of any material. But with us, you can check out ethical goods made with deadstock fabrics that are natural (aka made from plants) and/or synthetic.

But let's talk about synthetic deadstock fabrics!

Let's imagine a brand working with nylon. In case they produce more nylon than needed for their use, they can sell it to another brand. It's a win-win scenario. One brand can still make some profit over the surplus fabric. The other brand can make goods from sustainable fabric – fabric that would otherwise be wasted.

Or, when a polyester fabric gets dyed blue instead of purple. Well, mistakes happen everywhere. But this 'damaged' fabric can still be used. And something beautiful can be made out of it. It also happens that during production, some fabric scraps are created. The brand can either still use it for some accessories, for instance, or sell it to another brand that shows interest in it.

So, instead of this material being thrown away or burnt, it gets a second chance. A chance to end up in someone's wardrobe and be worn! Because when someone sees trash, somebody else sees value.

Using a piece of fabric instead of throwing it away is, of course, more sustainable. It's also resource and energy efficient because a new fabric doesn't have to be produced instead.

But the fast fashion industry always knows how to ruin a great idea. So, sometimes it happens that fabric is overproduced with the intention to sell it as deadstock fabric later.

And when we talk about synthetic deadstock fabrics we can't ignore the synthetic part. Whether it is nylon, polyester or other synthetic fabrics, they are all made from fossil fuels. Next to releasing greenhouse gas emissions, they also shed microplastics.

It is good to be aware of these problems and opt for more sustainable materials when you can. But in today's world, it is tricky to avoid synthetic fabrics all the time. And wearing something made from leftover synthetic fabric sounds like a great alternative.
