Vegan in Copenhagen - eight fab places to try

Anja Anja 29 Jul 2014 Vegan in Copenhagen - eight fab places to try
In March 2024 Shop Like You Give a Damn acquired Vilda Magazine. This is why all the editorial content that founder Sascha Camilli and her team created with so much dedication, is now featured amongst our blogs.

It’s not easy being vegan or vegetarian in the country that has more pigs than humans (20 million more to be exact). When I first moved to Copenhagen in 2010, there weren’t many places I knew of where I could choose food from the entire menu (oh the luxury – and oh the indecision!). For a foodie like me, it was quite depressing and I often hopped on the train to Malmö, Sweden – a 30 minute train ride away – to eat delicious falafels and Indian food. But as time went by and I explored more and more of Copenhagen, I found that vegan (and vegetarian) cuisine had finally spread to meat-lovers haven as well. While many places in Copenhagen offer vegetarian options (with eggs and/or dairy), it’s still not that easy to find good restaurants with delicious, vegan food. But don’t you worry about that – I’ve got you covered for your next Copenhagen visit!

Here are 8 Copenhagen restaurants that serve foodie-approved, mouth-watering vegan food:

42 Raw 42 Raw was Copenhagen’s first raw food restaurant with an all vegan menu. Today, the menu is not entirely raw, but is entirely vegan – yay! The food is fresh, delicious, and entirely different than other vegan places. If you’re craving a delicious vegan breakfast opt for the cashew yoghurt with fresh fruit and organic almond granola. Or try the raw food lasagna, the thai noodles, or the tapas with a selection of raw specialties. I really recommend trying the chocolate smoothie and one of 42 Raw’s delicious vegan cakes for dessert. Even your most raw-food skeptic friends will love the food here. Where: Pilestræde 32, 1112 København K, Waterfront, Tuborg Havnevej 4-8, 2900 Hellerup (just outside of Copenhagen) 42raw   Astrid och Aporna Spiseri

In Sweden, Astrid och Aporna is not only a vegetarian and vegan supermarket in Malmö, but also a brand of vegan food products offering e.g. “f*shsticks”, vegan cheeses of all kinds, a vegan Christmas ham (for a truly guilt-free Christmas celebration), and much more. In May 2014, Astrid och Aporna opened up a small vegan street kitchen on the hip Jægersborgsgade in Nørrebro where you can order different kinds of vegan hot dogs, served with delicious relish of your choice (try the Höt Charlotte!) and optional cashews on top, or several types of burgers (pictured below) served with their homemade buns and relish. There are some tables outside but I’d recommend you take it to go and soak up the sun in the park just down the street (Nørrebroparken) instead.

The freetown of Christiania isn’t all cannabis, Hell’s Angels, and hippies – it’s a truly unique and beautiful place one must visit when in Copenhagen, especially during summer. It is no surprise that it is among the free-spirited population of Christiania we find one of Copenhagen’s vegan gems: Morgenstedet. Morgenstedet serves delicious vegetarian and vegan food at a very reasonable price. Take your plate outside and eat in the picturesque garden while you listen to the little birds singing and waiting for you to leave your half-eaten plate so they can indulge in some vegan deliciousness as well.

Where: Fabriksområdet 134, 1440 København K morgenstedet2 Kalaset

Kalaset is a Swedish inspired café located in a basement not far from Nørreport Station. The retro vibe with old tape recorders on the walls and flea market furniture will make you feel as though you’ve just set foot in your grandmother’s home. The atmosphere is unpretentious and the food is delicious! The place is not entirely vegan, but is a great place to bring your non-vegan or vegetarian friends as there is something for everyone on the menu. Their vegan brunch is absolutely fantastic with Moroccan lentil ratatouille, falafel, grilled vegetables, ovenbaked potatoes and soy yoghurt with homemade muesli. Or try Las Vegan - the vegan burger.  Extra bonus: they have vegan nutella!

Where:  Vendersgade 16, 1363 København K kalaset Café N

Café N is located on Blågårdsgade, a cosy little street in Nørrebro, and is one of the few all-vegetarian/vegan places in Copenhagen. The menu offers a wide variety of vegan or vegetarian options whether you are craving a small snack, a nice vegan burger, or a brunch on a sunny day. The place is small and often packed, but during summer time there are tables outside as well. Their juices are a must! The atmosphere here is relaxed and laid back, much like all of Blågårdsgade.  (While you’re here, don’t miss the wine bar just around the corner!).

Where:  Blågårdsgade 17, 2200 København N   Botaniq

Vegan gourmet food made from mostly organic and locally produced ingredients? Yes, please! At Botaniq, the food is in focus, but every single detail in this restaurant is vegan – the drinks, the interior, and even the candles are vegan. Now that’s what I call dedication! The prices are a bit steep, but then again this is fine dining and if you’re a foodie like I am, this is a must. The restaurant is located near Nørreport Station. It is currently closed due to renovations but will open again in August.

Where:  Frederiksborggade 26, 1360 København

Døp - Den Økologiske Pølsemand When you step off the plane at Copenhagen Airport, the first thing that greets you is the smell of pølse – the Danish hot-dog. The Danes love their hot-dogs and if you want to know what all the fuss is about, there are two hot-dog stands in the center of Copenhagen that serve vegan hot-dogs – and they’re surprisingly good! Look for Den Økologiske Pølsemand (the organic hot-dog man) near Rundetårn or close to Zara at Strøget, the main shopping street. The bread is made from whole grain sour dough and is delicious. Great for when you need a quick snack in between shopping. Where:  By Helligåndskirken, Strøget, København K By Rundetårn, Købmagergade, København K   Halifax I love burgers and was so happy when I found Halifax, which serves amazing vegan and vegetarian burgers. You compose your own burger menu by choosing from several different burger-styles, type of bun, type of burger (there’s chickpea burger for vegetarians and pea burger for vegans), side order and dip. The staff is helpful if you’re a vegan and will make sure your burger doesn’t contain the cheese, aioli, or chipotle stated on the burger menu. You will get very full and it will be very, very tasty – I promise. Where:  Frederiksborggade 35, 1360 København K Larsbjørnsstræde 9, 1454 København K
