Unsere Gastautorin Annie Button ist eine vielseitige Content-Autorin aus Portsmouth in England, die die nachhaltige Lebensweise total begeistert: We vote with our money, and when it comes to creating a sustainable future, what we buy makes a big impact. Many of the goods we use every day deplete our natural resources and are harmful to our ecosystems and environment. Understanding the importance of sustainable shopping and how to implement it into your own routine can make a big difference to supporting climate targets and a more sustainable future.

The benefits of sustainable shopping

Sustainable shopping has become increasingly important in recent years due to the negative impact that human activity has had on the planet. To prevent a rise in global temperatures, which scientists say would lead to a collapse of natural systems, the average global footprint needs to drop substantially. By adopting eco-friendly purchasing habits, individuals can help to reduce waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve the health of the planet and the population. Sustainable products are specifically designed to be reused, repurposed or recycled, and often use materials that would have otherwise gone to waste. Additionally, sustainable products avoid the use of harmful chemicals such as flame retardants, formaldehyde and BPAs, which can negatively impact human health. By shopping sustainably and making conscious choices when purchasing items, individuals can help decrease disease-causing air, water and soil contamination, which according to the World Health Organisation, leads to 4.2 million deaths each year from air pollution alone, and prevent items from winding up in landfills.

Reduces waste

Single-use items are quickly thrown away, which contributes to unnecessary waste, not to mention the packaging around those items which is also instantly thrown away. Over-packaging is a real problem that many businesses are guilty of, and it is an issue that needs to be resolved to take control of climate change. On the other hand, sustainable products are designed with this problem in mind, meaning the lifecycle of the product is built into the very design of the item to enable you to repurpose it or recycle it when it’s no longer needed. Similarly, the materials used for sustainable products are often compostable and biodegradable or reusing materials that would go to waste, such as recycled PET or vinyl. Sustainable businesses also understand the importance of greener packaging, and how this plays a part in eco-shopping. For example, MPB, a business that specialises in buying, selling and trading used photography equipment, uses 100% plastic-free packaging and sustainable-sourced card and paper which can be reused or recycled.

Lower greenhouse gases

Traditional manufacturing processes involve burning fossil fuels and chemicals, which both emit huge quantities of greenhouse gases. But when you shop sustainably, you can be confident that the business has made use of green energy sources such as wind or solar power, and energy-efficient processes. Sustainable products are often produced locally too, which reduces the distance they need to travel to reach consumers. This cuts down on the emissions generated by transportation, as well as the amount of fossil fuels used for shipping.

Minimised production waste

Production waste, especially in the fashion industry, is a massive problem and on a global scale, textile waste in particular amounts to millions of tonnes of waste, the vast majority of which can be recycled. Brands that prioritise sustainability reduce this waste, producing in smaller quantities and veering away from fleeting trends that will encourage wasteful habits in consumers.

Healthier work environments

Ensuring fair wages and a healthy work environment is crucial for the wellbeing of workers, especially in the fast fashion industry where many companies rely on sourcing their clothing from developing nations. Unfortunately, most of these companies prioritise profits over people, leading to a situation where workers are forced to toil long hours in hazardous conditions for meagre pay. The intense pressure to produce clothes quickly and cheaply fosters an exploitative work environment, and some brands have even been accused of using child labour. In contrast, sustainable clothing companies take care of their staff, ensuring fair wages and a healthy work environment that protects them against accidents and long-term ill health. How to incorporate sustainability into your shopping habits

Making changes to your shopping habits is easier than many people realise, and it can be applied to anything from electronics and furniture to clothing and groceries.

Thrift instead of buying new

Today, the world is overflowing with products to cater to every possible need or taste, so chances are that the item you’re looking for has already been produced. Thrifting items and buying what others no longer need not only saves you money but also prevents new items from needing to be produced. This minimises additional pollution from manufacturing and shipping, and preserves materials. There are numerous platforms for buying used items, making it easier than ever to find exactly what you need at a discounted price and in a greener way.

Pay attention to materials

Synthetic fibres such as polyester and nylon create far more carbon emissions than natural fibres, and they’re more difficult to recycle. These materials also release microplastics which are damaging to our ecosystems and oceans. So, paying attention to the materials used in a product can make a big difference to its sustainable credentials. Opt for plant-based products where possible, such as hemp and linen, and buy from businesses that make it easy to recycle products at the end of their life.

Choose quality over quantity

Buying from high-quality sustainable brands may cost more initially, but it makes items more cost-effective in the long term because the items are durable and won’t need replacing as often. Cheap products may seem like a great deal initially, but it’s a false economy because you’ll end up throwing them away far sooner. So, skip the slew of poorly-made, cheap products in favour of higher quality, better produced ones.

Opt for alternatives to single-use items

We’re so used to single-use items that we often don’t consider the alternative, but reusable products have become more mainstream in recent years and it’s easier than ever to make the switch. From washable facial pads in place of disposable cotton pads to metal safety razors and refillable water bottles, there are many ways we can switch to products that don’t place as much of a burden on the environment. Shopping sustainably makes a huge difference to how we collectively build a greener future, reducing harmful emissions and helping to minimise how much waste is sent to landfill.
