Fashion should not cost the planet a thing, Claudia believes. As founder of webshop thegreenlabels, she’s convinced that if people were given the option to shop sustainably without having to compromise on style, they would definitely do so. That’s why she started her webshop: a collection of fair, local, sustainable brands mixed with a range of vegan items.

More about thegreenlabels

The green labels at Thegreenlabels

Founder Claudia envisions a world in which people can easily find and buy products that make a positive impact, both on themselves and on the world. By making sustainable fashion more accessible and creating a demand for it, she hopes to encourage other brands and the entire industry to switch to a more sustainable model.

The green brands that thegreenlabels collect therefore meet certain sustainable and ethical values. To be part of their range, labels must be able to guarantee fair working conditions and at least meet one of these criteria:

  • Being vegan. In our opinion, of course, one of the basic principles of a sustainable and ethically responsible world.
  • Producing locally. Labels that do this support local communities and help them preserve local economic and social wealth.
  • Cleaner processes. Think of organic, natural materials and sustainable fibers, fewer or even no harmful chemicals during cultivation and processing, less water consumption, clean energy and sustainable logistics.
  • Waste reduction. For everyone who believes that a circular economy can solve many problems. This type of brand uses, for example, fabric waste and worn-out materials to produce new clothing.

Environmentally-friendly packaging and 100% carbon-neutral transport: closing the loop

"We use packaging that’s, for 90%, made from recycled cardboard,” Claudia states. She finds circularity and closing the loop important concepts, and therefore invites you to throw the paper packaging in the separate paper bin after use so it can be recycled. But her eco-quest continues.

In the Netherlands, thegreenlabels relies on bike-delivery. They have the first branded bicycle delivery system in the country and have even won prizes for this sustainable solution. They deliver by bike in 30 large cities in The Netherlands and use green gas buses for longer distance deliveries within the country. They are 100% carbon-neutral. Now, that’s true progress.

Thegreenlabels does its best to reduce the use of paper and packaging. Even the thank you cards that Claudia sends out, are made as sustainably as possible. For these cards, they use MOO cards that are made from leftover cotton fabric. No trees were harmed!

Sustainable materials and certifications

It is impossible to talk about sustainability without talking about textiles. It is a complicated subject because many aspects have to be considered – from the entire production cycle and its durability… to the end of a fabric’s lifecycle.

Claudia: "We did research and came up with the following simple rules. We prefer natural, organic and recycled fibers and try to stay away from synthetic and mixed fibers. If we choose synthetic fibers, we prefer sustainable and clean processes such as TENCEL® for lyocell." In this collection, you will find the most beautiful items made from organic cotton, hemp, linen, sustainable viscose, Lyocell, modal, cupro, recycled polyester, and recycled nylon.

What about the certifications, you ask? Well, Thegreenlabels mostly works with labels that use certifications such as GOTS for organic substances, Oeko-Tex and Reach for the proper use of harmful chemicals. Just another feather in the cap of this company.
