"Ethics and aesthetics": that’s how to sum up Noumenon. Inspired by the noumenal world of the philosopher Immanuel Kant, founder Dena devoted himself to making cruelty-free fashion that’s produced equally ethically as elegantly. This Dutch brand doesn’t contribute to fast fashion and doesn’t launch seasonal collections. Noumenon chooses "slow design": creating timeless clothing, made for conscious individuals who want to feel beautiful and comfortable – both inside and outside.

The clothing industry contributes to a lot of environmental problems. The ever-changing seasonal styles encourage over-consumption, as well as wastefulness and a certain disregard for the consequences of this production philosophy. Fast fashion’s need for speed is dominating the clothing industry more than ever before. But by making long-lasting, seasonless products, Noumenon wants to break this cycle. The company aims to produce in the most sustainable way. And whenever a garment had reached the end of its lifespan and is discarded, its raw materials can ‘simply’ be recycled.
Founder Dena finds design and quality very important. According to her, clothing is even more beautiful when it is produced ethically and cruelty-free. That is why she likes to use natural fibers. The pieces in the collection consist of linen, organic cotton, cupro and tencel, as well as innovative recycled materials. And textile waste is given a new life, too.
Noumenon's garments are Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) certified. While that sounds great already, what does it mean?
The GOTS is one of the leading certifications for textiles, where at least 70% of the garment must consist of organically produced materials. All chemical additives, such as dyes, must meet certain environmental criteria and acceptable working conditions, and fair wage criteria must be met in order for the company to legally use the certification.
The BCI relates to ecological, social and economic sustainability. This initiative aims to ensure that cotton farmers learn to work independently and encourage the scaling up of collective action to establish Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream resource.
Noumenon only uses fabrics and garments that come from Europe, to reduce unnecessary CO2 emission as much as possible. The inks used for the prints are environmentally-friendly, the labels in the clothing are made from recycled cotton, and the price tags from recycled paper. Each order is wrapped in recycled packaging and orders that need to be delivered in Amsterdam are transported electrically.
Dena wants to change the world through Noumenon. Her motto? ‘Change the world, and look amazing while you do it.’ #changethegame
