While on a holiday in Sardinia, founders Johan and his partner discovered the cork handbags that were being sold in local shops. "We never seen that before," they thought. The two were so impressed by the bags that they decided to make their own collection of vegan bags: Italian designs made from environmentally friendly cork. And that’s how Lin&a was born.

Johan equates Sardinia to a rough pearl in the Mediterranean. "Growing cork oaks is a widely spread practice throughout the island. The cork that is grown here can be used for all kinds of purposes." He loves it. After all, cork leather is water-repellent, environmentally-friendly, fire-resistant, insulating, flexible and light to wear, easy to clean, anti-allergenic, and (as an added bonus): very beautiful.
Linea uses the cork from this region for its collection of cork leather bags, purses, jewelry, belts, shoes and more. "These refined finished products, each with a unique design or pattern, truly has become a hallmark for the fashion and eco-conscious industry," Johan says.
"Our own line is completely vegan, with a GOTS certified organic cotton lining." And with his cork gems, he does everything to shake off outdated, stubborn stereotypes about tree-hugging vegans. The brand even offers a shiny black handbag with the texture of crocodile skin which is almost indistinguishable from real – beautiful, but also a bit creepy.
Cork is a light and elastic material that is made from the bark of the cork oak. There are many cork oak forests around the Mediterranean Sea, with intense cultivation in Italy and Portugal. Johan gets the material for his collection from these two countries.
As soon as a cork oak tree turns 25 years, it is stripped of its skin every nine years. The bark is then processed into various products. According to Johan, cork is a very environmentally-friendly product, both in terms of production process and recycling. It is a very durable material that extraordinarily continues to retain its properties, even after a long period of time. Are you already tempted to make room in your closet for some cork?
