Lenzing EcoVero is a semi-synthetic cellulosic fiber in the family of rayon. This soft fabric is a more sustainable viscose fiber made by LENZING™.
This might ring a bell, as this Austrian company also produces Tencel Lyocell and Tencel Modal.
This material is made from sustainable wood pulp from FSC- or PEFC-certified forests in Europe.
EcoVero viscose is more sustainable than regular viscose. How come?
Well, in the process of dissolving the wood pulp to make viscose, a lot of water and chemicals are used. These chemicals include, for instance, caustic soda, carbon disulfide or sulfuric acid. But in the case of EcoVero viscose, almost all the chemicals are recovered and later reused.
What's more, the bleaching process of the wood pulp is chlorine-free. And this cannot be said about regular viscose. It is also reported that EcoVero viscose is responsible for 50% fewer emissions and less water and energy use compared to regular viscose. Also, while this material is made of sustainable wood sources, regular viscose is linked to massive deforestation.
For all the above reasons, EcoVero viscose is certified with the European Ecolabel.
EcoVero viscose is a soft, light, comfortable and slightly shiny fabric. It is also water-absorbent, anti-bacterial and resistant to wrinkling and pilling.
Plus, it is smooth and has a luxurious feel, just like not-so-ethical nor sustainable silk. EcoVero viscose is also good at regulating the absorption and release of moisture. So, it's a nice breathable fabric to wear. Especially when the sun is out!
But it's not all sunshine and roses. Lenzing EcoVero is not very stretchy unless it is mixed with more flexible materials. Also, it doesn't resist high temperatures and sunlight which might reduce its longevity. And it might shrink a bit too. But steaming the garment makes it gain its original size back if you wash it correctly.
Lenzing EcoVero is used to make blouses, shirts, suits, coats, evening or summer dresses, activewear and knitwear. Pajamas and underwear can also be made with this fabric. And it can be used in bathrobes, towels, bed sheets or home decor too.
Want to see it for yourself? Then go and check out beautiful dresses, shirts and blouses for women or shirts for men.
Lenzing EcoVero has similar properties to Tencel Lyocell. Yet, the latter is considered to be more sustainable. How come?
Well, the production of Tencel Lyocell doesn't require toxic chemicals. However, Tencel Lyocell is less resistant to color fading. So, in this sense, garments made of EcoVero viscose may last longer.
