More about Osier

Women on a vegan mission

Theresa and Fiona want to normalize wearing vegan bags and make them attractive. And we’re pleased to announce: they have done a great job. Slow fashion at its finest, with a minimalist design and made with faux leather.

Theresa, who has been a vegan for years, noticed that it hadn’t been difficult for her to switch to a plant-based lifestyle. But she did find it challenging to shop stylish vegan fashion items. The existing vegan luxury brands were making beautiful yet very expensive products. And the brands that were more affordable, often went more towards a style that she wasn’t really looking for. She decided it was time for a happy medium that would appeal to everyone, vegan or not.

Luxury plant-based bags and purses

Osier’s ethical collection currently offers unique bags and beautiful purses in black and a chic shade of eggplant. The products are named after areas in the founders’ beloved Amsterdam. Our favorites are definitely the elegant JORDAAN shoulder bag/crossbody and the tough but sleek NIEUW-WEST bag. The daring DE PIJP bag has a shape that’s similar to the map outline of the famous Amsterdam neighborhood De Pijp.

Very transparent: fair, sustainable and qualitative

Osier ensures that these three values are maintained throughout their entire business process: from the sourcing of the vegan, eco-conscious materials from Italy to the production and even the packaging. The Osier factory is located in Romania and operates as sustainably as possible. Just to give an example: the packaging is completely recycled, plastic-free and contains no unnecessary filling material, which is usually added to ensure that the bag stays in place during shipping. A neighboring factory (awesome) has developed packaging that fits exactly around the bag. Ideal. The women also operate as locally as possible, and compensate for the CO2 that is released during production with green wind energy. Another feel-good fact: the brand donates a percentage of its profit to The Ocean Clean Up, a Dutch non-profit that combats the ‘plastic ocean soup’.

The factory also pays its employees fair wages and meets all kinds of social and safety requirements; ISO 9001, ISO 18001, ISO 14001, and more. Theresa is all for fair business, and the well-known hashtag #whomademyclothes is well-represented in her online communication. She lovingly talks about her team of 15 experienced, inspiring and talented workers who make all Osier products by hand.

Why their faux leather is just as qualitative as animal leather but not necessarily cheaper? The brand explains: "There are cheaper kinds of faux leather in India, Bangladesh and China, but those aren’t sustainable and qualitative alternatives.” Osier gets the raw material for their faux leather from Italy and its quality cannot be compared to cheaper materials. “Our material is twice as expensive as regular, animal leather. The material we use, a mix of PVC and eco-friendly PU, is also used in healthcare and for airplane seats." Not only does that make for strong bags, they are also durable and retain their beautiful looks over a long period of time. Fiona: “We use materials that don’t scratch and retain its qualities. Also, we’ve designed the bags in a way that they won’t lose their shape over time."

Another feel-good fact: the latest collection from Osier is made from 50% apple leather and 50% environmentally-friendly PU. Want to get your hands on some apple leather now? We can totally relate.
