A Beautiful Story was founded by Cathelijne Lania in 2006 after 12 silversmiths in Nepal lost their jobs. Cathelijne knows them personally, and decides to start her own brand. A Beautiful Story makes jewelry, paper goods and home accessories, but most of all, they want to create stories. For their makers this means that through their craftsmanship they can build a life. A Beautiful Story offers their makers something they call ‘living wage plus’. This means that the makers receive a living wage, but the brand also makes sure that the makers can offer quality education to their children, build up a pension and receive paid maternity leave. It also means that they regularly check whether the wages are still sufficient. They do this by asking their employees to keep track of their expenses for a month. If there turns out to be a financial gap, they take steps to close it. The brand’s strong social mission actually comes first, before making profits. To them, money is a means, not a purpose. We love to see it!
