Internship: Front End Development

Alex Alex 20 Jun 2022 Internship: Front End Development

Want to be part of the mission-driven development team of Shop Like You Give a Damn and help taking our platform to the next level? Our three developers Alex, Tim and Bruno are looking for an intern front end (or full stack) development by their side to work on and learn from our custom website and front end system!

Who are we?

Shop Like You Give a Damn is the largest 100% vegan, fair and sustainable online department store in Europe. Our marketplace offers a collection of ethical clothing, bags, shoes, accessories, home essentials, makeup and care products for essentially everyone, from hundreds of ethical brands and sellers.

Shop Like You Give a Damn was founded by Stephan, Kim and Alex: three enthusiasts who with their team, great plans and a healthy dose of impatience, are on a mission to turn the shopping world upside down. We say: shop with compassion. As little as possible. But when you do buy something, make it a vegan, fair and sustainable purchase. That is kind to all beings on earth. Kind to our fellow animals, to our fellow people, to all future generations.

Our mission is to make compassion and sustainability the new normal, by making ethical and mindful shopping really easy for everyone. That’s why we founded the largest online vegan department store for fair and sustainable products in Europe. For those who give a damn.

What are you going to do?

We are looking for a development intern to work on our custom website and front end system.

Here's the knowledge and experience we'd like you to have:

Required knowledge

You need to have proven skills in web development:

  • HTML en CSS (SASS)

Preferred knowledge / experience

You will use these technologies, but they can easily be learned on the job:

  • C# or related server side technologies (like PHP or Java)
  • Database experience (Sql and/or NoSql)
  • Fetch Api
  • Version control / git (working with Pull Requests)
  • 'Serverless' platforms (Netflify/Vercel/Begin/Cloudflare)

Nice to have

Our backend team works with:

You probably won't work with the following technologies, but knowledge of them can be beneficial:

  • Firestore / Firebase
  • MongoDB / CouchDB
  • Elastic search

And who are you?

We think that the following set of traits, interests and experience will be the best match:

  • You're currently in the 3rd or 4th year of your ICT, Computer Science, Software Engineering or Application and Media Development and you're on your way to becoming a front end or full stack developer.
  • You share our mission of making compassion and sustainability the new normal. You are (on your way to becoming) a vegan and have a passion for a vegan, fair & sustainable lifestyle.
  • You are pragmatic, creative and open-minded.
  • You have an academic mind.
  • You have a high verbal proficiency in English. Speaking Dutch is a plus.
  • You will be available for 32 - 40 hours per week.
  • You live in or nearby Amsterdam or are okay with remote working from somewhere else in the world.
  • You cannot wait to roll up your sleeves and deploy your epic programming skills!

What do we offer?

  • Being responsible for the tech behind a global marketplace that has an ethical compass and sails a commercial course.
  • The opportunity to make a real impact WITH and IN our startup and determine its future course with us.
  • Collaborating with an enthusiastic and incredible team of mission-aligned people.
  • Working in our Amsterdam West office right across from the Westergasfabriekterrein, but also flexible working wherever and whenever you want.
  • A wonderfully relaxed and fun startup culture where you won't be afraid to ask and discuss anything.
  • Vegan treats whenever we have (some/no)thing to celebrate.
  • Table tennis battles with your teammates.
  • A suitable internship compensation.
